Denver: An Outdoor Haven
Denver is the capital and the most populous municipality in the U.S. state of Colorado. Denver is located in the South Platte River, approximately twelve miles east of the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. It is nicknamed the “Mile-High City” because its official elevation is exactly one mile above sea level, making it one of the highest major cities in the United States. According to a 2009 Pew Research Center study, Denver ranks as the most popular American city based on where people want to live. The city is home to many nationally recognized museums, art districts, and local breweries. Because of its proximity to the mountains and generally sunny weather, Denver has gained a reputation as being a very active, outdoor-oriented city. Many Denver residents spend the weekend in the mountain: skiing in the winter and climbing, kayaking, and camping in the summer. Denver is also home to four major sports franchises including the Denver Broncos, the Colorado Avalanche, the Denver Nuggets, and the Colorado Rockies.
